Our Founding

Long before there were Lodges, there were laborers.

Before titles, before charters, before the formal gathering of men under name and number—there were those who stood in the quarries, shaping stone beneath the open sky. These were not merely builders of structures, but students of order, balance, and proportion. With each strike of the working tools, they came to understand a deeper truth: that the stone before them was not unlike the man within them—rough, unrefined, yet full of potential.

From those early hands emerged more than temples of stone. There arose a tradition—quiet, deliberate, and enduring—passed not only through words, but through example, discipline, and observation.

It is said that all true knowledge comes from the East—not merely as a direction, but as a principle. The East is the place of light, of rising, of beginning. It represents the moment when darkness gives way to understanding. In every age, there have been those who turned themselves toward that light, seeking not comfort, but truth.

Across generations, this pursuit has taken many forms. It has been spoken through the wisdom of builders, the reflections of philosophers, and the allegories of sacred texts. Whether one considers the master craftsman who designed with divine proportion, the seeker who asked for wisdom above riches, or the teacher who spoke in parables so that only those prepared might understand—the thread remains the same:

Light must be sought.

Lights of the East Lodge No. 33 stands not as the beginning of that tradition, but as its continuation.

We are brothers who have inherited a system of knowledge refined over centuries—preserved not in monuments alone, but in the hearts and minds of those willing to receive it. What was once etched in stone is now carried through instruction, ritual, and daily practice. The quarry has changed form, but the work remains.

Today, the labor is inward.

Each Brother enters as a rough ashlar, bringing with him his own experiences, imperfections, and potential. Through study, discipline, and the guidance of those who came before, he begins the same work undertaken thousands of years ago—to shape, to refine, and to align himself with principles that do not change.

Knowledge is the foundation.

Not knowledge for the sake of accumulation, but knowledge that transforms. Knowledge that teaches a man how to stand upright, how to act justly, and how to build not only his own life, but something that will outlast him.

This is the inheritance of Lights of the East.

We do not claim to be the origin of the light—but we are committed to carrying it forward. As those before us labored in the quarries, so do we labor now—each in our own way—ensuring that what has been handed down is not lost, but strengthened, clarified, and passed on to those yet to come.

For in every age, the work continues.

And in every age, there must be men willing to do it.

The Language of Symbolism

Freemasonry speaks in symbols.

Tools once used by operative builders—such as the square, compass, and level—are used to teach deeper truths:

• To act with integrity and fairness
• To keep one’s desires within proper bounds
• To walk uprightly and deal justly with others

These symbols are not meant to be taken at face value, but to be studied, reflected upon, and lived.

What Freemasonry is Not

To understand what Freemasonry is, it is equally important to understand what it is not:

• It is not a secret society, but a society with private traditions and modes of recognition
